Smokey Bear is one of Ruidoso’s most famous residents. He was born in the Capitan Mountains and has been living in Ruidoso since 1950. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at Smokey Bear’s history and how he came to represent Ruidoso, NM!
Smokey Bear was originally created by the United States Forest Service (USFS) in 1944. His purpose was to raise awareness about the dangers of forest fires. Smokey’s message was simple: “Only YOU can prevent forest fires!” The USFS used Smokey Bear in their advertising campaigns and he quickly became one of the most recognizable characters in America.
In 1950, a fire started in Ruidoso near Smokey’s home in the Capitan Mountains. Smokey Bear played a vital role in helping to extinguish the fire. After the fire was extinguished, Ruidoso officials asked if they could adopt Smokey as their town mascot. The USFS agreed, and Smokey Bear has been representing Ruidoso ever since!
